Spiritual journaling looks good on you

“Lackadaisical,” popped into my head the other day. It’s a peculiar word, and the only time I can recall hearing it was when my mom wanted us kids to jump into action. She’d emphatically say, "This is no time to be lackadaisical!”

Betty Lou passed a year ago—perhaps this is her on the other side of the veil—urging me onwards as 2026 picks up steam. As it does, we’ll each be called to action in ways previously unfathomable. It’s go-time on the planet, and one thing is for sure: Personal empowerment is mission number one. How do we reclaim power as individuals at this pivotal moment to do good as we personally see fit—to help when and where we can, and to feel the love, joy, and freedom that is our birthright? How do we gain the confidence, courage, and compassion needed when rulebooks are being tossed out the window?

Like a luminescent firefly that shines from within, it’s all about directly connecting to your inner light or Soul. That spark of all-knowing, all-powerful divinity residing in the heartspace of each one of us. A really powerful way to do so is through spiritual journaling. This ancient writing process is a one-off from traditional journaling, which is more about chronicling life, capturing moments, and sharing for posterity.

Spiritual journaling, on the other hand, takes things a step further. It creates an intentional dialogue and ongoing conversation between you and your soul. It offers space to hash things out and glean guidance and truth from your inner self, who’s ready and waiting to connect with you over your thoughts, feelings, and maybe a cup of tea.

This practice often involves writing prompts followed by free-flow writing where responses effortlessly flow from your heart onto the page. It’s a way to capture Soul’s clear wisdom, while easing the chaos, confusion, and twirling thoughts that otherwise cloud inspiration and keep truth just out of reach.

When you act upon the guidance and inspiration you receive, you become empowered by the greatest energy on the planet: LOVE.

Spiritual Journaling Deepens Self Awareness and Strengthens Intuition

Spiritual journaling allows you to quiet mental noise as you release onto paper whatever’s on your mind, such as intimate thoughts and questions, dreams and desires, hopes and fears. It’s a gentle and effective way to do your inner work and to feel good by leaning into your intuition, allowing your feelings to show you what’s up for review.

Through this ongoing give and take, you learn how to hear your soul’s voice and how to know when you’re on the right path. It becomes a powerful tool for creating the life of your dreams and is connected to infinite knowledge. You get to know your true and authentic self deeply and fall in love with who you really are. Over time, it becomes easier to discern what is yours and what’s not, like the heavy stuff you’ve picked up from other people and situations. Often this shows up as self-doubt, fearful thoughts and ideas, and outdated cultural rules and expectations that no longer make sense.

Our heart speaks with a quiet voice that can be heard in the silence. It can also come as a simple knowing; an aha! moment where an answer drops into your awareness, or when you see words that flow onto the page that are not your own.

You build trust in your voice as you act on your inspirations, then experience the results. Over time, as you take one step and then another, a new path emerges. Downward spirals slow to halt, and harmful thought patterns are more easily recognized, healed, and released. Momentum shifts upwards, and your life changes its tune.

It’s the inner work we’re all called to do. As you heal and release emotional wounds, peace and love immediately flow into the space that’s been created.

Spiritual Journaling Offers a Safe Place for Emotional Healing

Spiritual journaling offers a kind, safe place for reflection and non-judgment. As you dip into this well of eternal love and infinite knowledge, you’re led down a path to heal and release the layers of density that have kept you weighed down. You return to your lighter, all-powerful, authentic self.

Remember, your feelings are sacred. Yes, all of them. They are your connection to your inner divinity and what it is telling you in any given moment. They are yours and, by design, under your sole control. Spiritual journaling leverages that truth so that feelings can be seen, acknowledged, and understood.

Spiritual Journaling Cultivates Gratitude and Presence

As with learning anything new, practice matters. Creating a ritual helps build consistency and something sacred that you look forward to. All it takes is a quiet place that offers some solitude; perhaps you take it one step further with an altar, candles or incense, a simple flower or crystal, and ambient music. Add the invisible Source energy that arrives to greet you, and it becomes an intoxicatingly beautiful time.

I write each morning, and it’s my absolute favorite part of the day. It’s the anchor for my spiritual practice, and something I cannot imagine going without for any length of time. My day starts off on the right foot. Gratitude flows abundantly for the big and small alike, and for all of the wonder and awe that can be easy to otherwise miss. I’m thankful for the miracles and for the magic and synchronicities that occur on the regular.

One powerful example recently happened over the holidays. Before meeting my sister in Minnesota for a gift exchange, I journaled, asking my Self for reassurance about a matter related to my purpose. I wrote, “Please send a big sign; one I can’t miss.”

Later, while driving the long, windy road to Minnesota, a song began playing on the car radio that offered the deep, meaningful confirmation I’d hoped for. At that exact moment, a shadowy figure appeared on the road ahead. My jaw dropped. It was a bald eagle, perched on the pavement, looking me square in the eyes. It was, in effect, adding an exclamation point to the words of the song. Tears of joy flowed.

That ability to check in with the ultimate authority is priceless. To act from that place, in service to a higher good or god, makes you and your actions super-powered by love.

When you feel good, your inner light shines. Spiritual journaling begins a conversation with your Self and builds spiritual muscle through small, consistent actions that lead to lasting shifts and change. It’s no time to be lackadaisical. Humanity’s transformation is underway, calling each of us to move into inspired action, with our lights shining brightly as we together create a bespeckled canvas of fireflies to illuminate the dark night.

It’s simple to start: all it takes is intention and an invitation to your soul to join you.
