Calm in the Chaos: Spiritual Journaling for Beginners
Nature teaches me so much about resiliency, peace, wisdom, and continuation. You cannot rush an otter on a wave or a bee collecting honey. Those same attributes of a flow state are available within all of us, and making space for your inner wisdom doesn’t have to be complicated!
When you tap into your inner wisdom, you return to your heart center, where you can discern truth from fiction. Tuning out the noise amplifies your inner voice and self-love, and your world becomes more peaceful, calm, and intentional. You're in your power, solutions arrive with ease, as does joy. Synchronicities and signs pop up like daisies. Life becomes steady as your intuition guides you forward in a truly inspired and empowered way. You become truly sovereign.
Getting Started: Spiritual Journaling for Beginners
The path to an empowered writing practice builds an inner channel for inspiration and love to flow. Spiritual journaling is secular and not prescribed to just one religion. It is a practice of connecting with your inner thoughts, and it can be a truly wonderful method for self-reflection. These five easy steps can help you begin.
1. Prepare
Dedicate a small bit of time in your day (20 minutes or so is ideal!), whatever you have is perfect, and you can always squeeze in more minutes when you have them.
Next, prepare your space. Find a spot where you can be alone without interruption. You may want to create a special or sacred spot, even engaging a bit of ritual. Light a candle or diffuse essential oils. Play soft, ambient music if you'd like (here's one of my favorite meditation arrangements). Arrange potted plants nearby to add a natural element. You get the gist.
Then grab your favorite pen, a notebook or journal, and a highlighter. Turn off your notifications, and then set a timer on your device for between 7 and 15 minutes. You're ready!
2. Set an Intention
Take a few minutes to close your eyes and breathe deeply, focusing on the movement of your stomach as you inhale and exhale. Once you're feeling relaxed, set an intention based on how you're feeling and how you want to feel. Or it could relate to the guidance you're seeking or a truth you're discerning. Whatever you land on, write that intention across the top of a blank page.
Then, speak slowly and from the heart, “Soul, may I hear your words and feel your inspiration. I step back and let you lead the way.” Tap the timer and away you go!
3. Start Writing
Use your intention as a prompt, then start writing and expounding. Let your thoughts flow onto the page, without judgment, downloading whatever pops into your head. Go with the words that are flowing. Set aside any self-editing, since it's far more important to keep your vibration high and pen moving. If you feel blocked, repeat your intention or a mantra like "I can do this!" or something silly that makes you happy, like “ducks quack”. Most importantly, just write words. Stay relaxed and you'll be rolling again soon!
4. Ask Questions Along the Way
You may want to ask a question. For example, “What is my role in this situation?” “What lesson is here for me to see?” “Where is this pain coming from?” or “What is my next step?”
It’s important to remember that when you ask, an answer is always given. Your job at that point is to be open to receiving it—whether that’s in the moment or sometime later—when you're relaxed and not expecting it, when one can easily appear via technology, friends, words, messages, intuitive hits, and synchronicities out of the blue.
When time is up, finish your thought, set down your pen, close your eyes, and relax. Spend a minute or two to simply be with yourself. It's a good time to express gratitude for the small things that come to mind, related to your session or things you're appreciating at the moment.
5. Act on Guidance Received
Now, with a highlighter in hand, go back and read through what you wrote. Note anything that stands out. It might be a fresh take, feel intuitive, weirdly resonates, or something that feels like it’s coming from elsewhere (because it’s arriving straight from your heart!). Here are some ways to help distinguish whether what you’ve written is from your head or true guidance, which comes from your heart:
Ask yourself, “Does it feel good when I’m feeling good?” If so, then it’s a solid GO! If you’re in the midst of an emotional storm, though, you’ll probably be blocked from receiving Soul's answers until your vibration—or mood and attitude—improves. When you allow in some light, even for a brief second, a sliver of inspiration can slip in with it to find you.
It gently directs you forward. Soul’s guidance always nudges and never demands anything.
It feels satisfying, like a step in the right direction. Soul will give you just what you need to move in the right direction.
It embodies love and elicits tingles, goose bumps, or an 'Aha!' moment.
It brings clarity. If you feel more confused, hang on and ask a clarifying question if one comes to you. Continue with your day and trust that an answer will come.
Before acting on the guidance you receive, make sure you're in a state of higher vibrations (such as happiness, peace, playfulness, or contentment), as that's when you're in your power.
